A lot of people will tell you about the general guidelines that should be followed during a job interview. These things will include punctuality, giving concise answers, proper dressing etc. However, you should know that there are other things also on which your suitability might be assessed. Etiquette depends on the way or mode through which the employer is contacting you. Here are some tips that you should employ to make your communication effective:

For Interview Over the Phone

  • Being prepared for the telephonic interview is the key. Keep a note of all the places that you have applied for, as it will help you recall instantly whenever someone calls you.
  • Be ready for the interviewer when he asks, “Is it a good time to talk?” Before saying yes, make sure that you are in a disturbance-free surrounding. Otherwise, you can always tell that you will call back. And do remember to keep your words and be punctual.
  • As more and more people are using caller tunes, try to keep your voice mail message tone and caller tune professional.
  • Be as formal as you would be in a face-to-face interview.

For Email Interaction

  • When applying for a job, give an email ID that is impersonal and discreet in place of email ids such as jazz4u@xyz.com (made this up).
  • Send a cover letter along with the resume as it will help the recruiter get more insight into your profile. Remember that recruiters get numerous applications and a good cover letter will help your resume stand out and get noticed. You can use resume services to write a professional resume for you.
  • See that the mail that you are sending is virus free.
  • If you have been in touch with the recruiter earlier in a series of mails, then make sure to send the mails in ‘reply mode’ to help recruiter know the background.
  • Try to send the mails as early as possible, maybe within 24 hours.

Follow Up

  • Do not forget to send a ‘thank you’ message after the interview.

If you do not want to go for the job at any stage of hiring, thank the recruiter for giving you time. This will help you keep a window open for the future. You can probably send an email to convey the message.
